في ليلة الجمعة وكانت ليلة القدر رأى يوسف عليه السلام أحد عشر كوكبا أي نجماً من نجوم السماء والشمس والقمر ساجدين له , فلما قصها على أبيـه يعقوب , استمع الأب إلى رؤيا ابنه وحذره أن يحكيها لأخوت, فلقد أدرك يعقوب -عليه السلام- بحدسه وبصيرته أن وراء هذه الرؤيا شأنا عظيما لهذا الغلام, لذلك نصحه بأن لا يقص رؤياه على إخوته خشية أن يستشعروا ما وراءها لأخيهم الصغير -غير الشقيق، حيث تزوج يعقوب من امرأة ثانية أنجبت له يوسف وشقيقه- فيجد الشيطان من هذا ثغرة في نفوسهم، فتمتلئ نفوسهم بالحقد، فيدبروا له أمرا يسوؤه. استجاب يوسف لتحذير أبيه , فلم يحدث أخوته بما رأى، وأغلب الظن أنهم كانوا يكرهونه إلى الحد الذي لا يجعله يطمئن! .

اجتمع أخوة يوسف يتحدثون في أمر يوسف عليه السلام , وقد قالوا " إن يوسف وأخيه أحب إلى ابينا منا " و " نحن مجموعة قوية تدفع وتنفع " فأبينا مخطئ في تفضيل هذين الصبيين على مجموعة من الرجال النافعين! فاقترح أحدهم حلا للموضوع: (اقْتُلُواْ يُوسُفَ أَوِ اطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًا). هكذا صنع الحسد والحقد حتى جعل إخوة يوسف عليه السلام يوازوا قتل اخيهم بحب أبيهم له! ( القتل ) إنه أكبر جرائم الأرض بعد الشرك بالله , وقالوا اطرحوه في أرض بعيدة نائية وهذا الامر مرادف للقتل، لأنه سيموت هناك لا محاله , وكان كل ذلك الصنيع لسبب واحد لا أقل ولا أكثر حتى لا يراه أبوه! فينساه فيوجه حبه كله لهم, ومن ثم يتوبون عن جريمتهم (وَتَكُونُواْ مِن بَعْدِهِ قَوْمًا صَالِحِينَ).
وبعد ذلك , تحدث أحدهم قائلاً : لمَ القتل ؟! استنكر قتل اخوة يوسف له عليه السلام ( رحمة بيوسف ) أو ( خوفاً من جريمة القتل ) فاقترح عليهم فكرة رميه في بئر وكان الهدف من ذلك أن تمر القوافل على هذا البئر فتلتقط احداها يوسف عليه السلام وتأخذه بعيداً عن حياتهم وعن ناظر ابيهم ويتحقق هدفهم بذلك , وافق الأخوة على رميه في ظلام البئر .
